Theek Thak: Mental Wellness Support
Raising Awareness, Reducing Stigma, Encouraging Support
SIWEC’s Theek Thak initiative aims to break the silence around mental health. We do this through community outreach, relatable storytelling, and accessible resources — all designed to encourage openness, empathy, and early support.
About the Initiative
Theek Thak is a mental health initiative dedicated to offering knowledge, information, and support to the Sikh and extended South Asian community concerning mental health and well-being. Our primary goal is to foster a positive culture of seeking help and care within our community. Collaborating with a team of mental health professionals, we develop resource materials and conduct workshops aimed at enhancing the mental well-being of our community members. Through these efforts, we strive to empower individuals to prioritize and nurture their mental health.
Are We Listening to Our Friends and Family?
Suicide Awareness Workshops
As part of ongoing efforts to foster open conversations around mental health, SIWEC’s Theek Thak initiative partnered with MentalAct to host engaging workshops on suicide awareness and emotional well-being.
Led by Devan, Director of MentalAct, the sessions invite participants to explore how to recognise early signs of distress in those around them and respond with empathy and care. These workshops see active participation, with thoughtful discussions on stigma, supportive communication, and the importance of simply being present for friends and family who may be struggling.
Such collaborations reinforce SIWEC’s commitment to mental health advocacy in the community.
Helping Students Cope with Stress
Exam Anxiety Workshops
SIWEC collaborates with professional agencies to deliver practical and timely workshops for students preparing for major national exams such as the PSLE, O-Levels, and A-Levels. The first such workshop was held in August 2024.
The sessions are led by a team of experienced professionals including clinical counsellors, psychotherapists and learning and behavioural therapists. Together, these professionals guide students and parents through effective techniques for managing exam-related stress and encourage healthy, open communication within families during this high-pressure period.
The workshops highlight SIWEC’s holistic approach to well-being, supporting not just individuals, but the family units around them.
