Eldercare Programme
Keeping Seniors Engaged, Connected and Independent
SIWEC’s Active Ageing initiatives promote social connection, mental stimulation, and physical activity among seniors. Through regular group sessions such as chair yoga, outings, and light exercises, we support older adults in staying active, confident, and involved in the community, helping them enjoy a better quality of life in their golden years.
About the Programme
SIWEC’s Eldercare Programme was launched in 2014 to support the social, mental, and emotional well-being of seniors in the Sikh community. The initiative began with a simple but meaningful goal, to encourage older adults to stay engaged through recreational and educational group activities.
The programme began with the formation of two main groups:
Sunehri Sahelian (Golden Girls), a women’s group; and Sunehray Pal (Golden Friends), a mixed group for both men and women. Each group meets regularly at designated Gurdwaras, where seniors gather for activities that promote connection, learning, and active living.
Over the years, the programme has expanded to include multiple groups held at different Gurdwaras, growing steadily in participation. Today, it offers a regular calendar of activities including health talks, Chair Yoga, cooking demonstrations, craft sessions, and outings to places of interest in Singapore and nearby regions.
These group sessions promote connection, learning, and active living. Participants have enjoyed learning new skills, making crafts, and even contributing to fundraising efforts and national initiatives. The programme continues to be supported by a dedicated team of volunteers who help plan and run the activities.
Through this initiative, SIWEC aims to help seniors age well, with dignity, community, and purpose
